We are just about to start setting up a brand new Windows 2003 Server.

This will run our "School Management System"
the easiest thing would be to name it after the name of
software, but this may not be
a good idea from a security point of view.

What is the general opinion/rules on naming a server?

Thanks for any suggestions
Steve

Depends on how big a site / org you are, whether you intend putting multiple apps on server etc. really.

We're a multionational so we use a country/location/function code for ours.

e.g. GBVOLAPP01 for Great Britain, VOL for sitename and APP because it is a general app server.
For file and print we use FP, for SQL server SQL and so on.

Really you just need to make sure that you are consistent with your conventions and leave enough flexibility so that if you add additional stuff to the server the name still makes sense.
