I have re-installed Win98 due to it developing a problem where files seemed to just disappear then blue screens would start, the system was fully patched with AV software and a firewall. I'm beginning to suspect a hardware problem is there any software that i can use that will test the basic functioning of my hardware?

I seem to remember something called PC check?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Go here:

and download one of the hard drive diagnostic tools, hard drive utilities or dlg something. You also might try running Scandisk from Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Scandisk. You might also try running you AV, download Spybot Search & Destroy, also AdAware SE Personal both available feely off the Web (do a search by name). Install, Update and run both software packages deleting all they find.

The drive seems fine, is it possible that a memory problem might cause this?

If the System is entirely clean - and that means MUCH MORE than an AV program and Firewall - much help in using the proggies suggested by ManicMark. AND you'll need serious Trojan Scanning.
Files do NOT just disappear.
Either a Malware is respponsible - or a Person is for deleting....
Perhaps the Disk is Full and deleting to make room.
Give more info please about disappearing files (System Files? - Important Data Files? - All one File type?).
Gotta say though a BSOD is not good...Bad Memory can have very odd effects, yet so can a failing PSU or even CPU....
so try a new stick of mem if possible.

It appears to be system files, i'm beginning to suspect the HD i was just wondering if there we're any utils that will scan memory and test the CPU as i don't have any spare CPU's that will fit the MoBo.

Thanks.
