mysql (linux) & encryption

I am creating an app that is hitting a mysql db on a linux redhat 9. i am using the mysql driver from mysql.org. the db will be sitting on a static on the internet. When my app hits the db, there will be no encryption will there? How would i go about encrypting it?

Man, i wish i would have thought of this before i got about 4000 lines of code done..........[evil]
