I have XP pro installed with my PC. Recently, the system will not run any program after I click MyComputer. The system shows blank window when I click MyComputer. If I try to close MyComputer, the system will clear all icons and leave wallpaper only. After this point, I can not do anything to it except turn off my PC.

Can someone help?

TIA

Roger

Bring up Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Delete) and under the "Proceses" tab find and end the process "explorer.exe"

Then Files, New Task, explorer.exe

Your desktop should reappear.

I think you should do at least two antivirus scans from smah's FAQ, (I would do Trend Micro and Panda): faq760-3862

Reboot. If there are still issues, download and run Hijack This! and post the results here.

I should note that this problem can occur for hardware reasons.

When you click "My Computer" it is going to scan all your hardware drives, Camera devices, Scanners, and local area Network mapped drives.

If there is a hardware issue with any of these you can freeze the computer.

Look first to USB devices, these are often problematic. Next on the list is scanners. But a hardware issue with your hard disk drive is common.

If it's not virus or spyware problems -

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
