Hi~

Just upgraded from Win98SE to WinXP Pro.
Love it....other then I've lost a lot of free space.
I have been travelling my entire computer to see what's there and what my not be needed anymore (old file / docs etc).
One file I've come across, "mybackup.qic", that is rather large (1.43GB). I have been reading and find all I see is it's related to Win98 backup. Is it safe to delete it now that I'm on XP? I didn't ask it to create this file. All my documents and files are backed up to CD.

Thanks for your assistance in advance!
Jeanette

See if these help you out. It is safe to delete all the 98 files if you don't intend to return to that operating system. Or you are happy to reinstall and reformat should you ever want to.

Run the Disk Defragmenter too.

With only 27% free space I'd worry, especially if you were worried about 1.5 gig. What size hard drive do you have?

micker377,
Sorry for not replying sooner....a little busy.
I have a 15.8 GB
Is there something that would take up a lot of space that someone like me, wouldn't concider looking at when trying to save space?

log files.

Have you ever run bootvis.exe or a similar logging facility? Remove the .log files.

I haven't run any program such as said. I have read up on this a little and it sounds more for fast boots etc. My start up time seems fine.

Is it safe to remove all .log files in my system? Are there any that should be kept?

It is not safe to remove ALL .log files, even if you could. There are some important and necessary log files for Windows and third party programs to run correctly. At this stage in your development, leave well alone. Temp files might be a safer choice, especially any you have in this location (Windows won't let you delete any that are in use)-

C:\Documents and Settings\UserNamexxxx\Local Settings\Temp

To check the above you must have Hidden files set to be seen in Control Panel/ Folder Options/ View

Via my original link to Disk Cleanup did you clean up your old System Restore points? These can take up to 12% of your drive.

To see what is using your disk space I recommend the free trial of this shareware program.

Have you even thought of purchasing a second hard drive?

Thanks linney. I feel so stupid [sadeyes] when I have to ask silly little questions like that, but I am glad I asked.

That disk data program is just what I needed. I took a look at my log files and they really don't take up much space at all. I ran Disk Data and there it was.....a large file that took up just way to much space (darn kids games). Uninstalled it and wow....35% free space. Yeah, we're getting there now. [2thumbsup]

Thanks again!

The only question that might be described as "silly" is any question never asked.
