My hard drive failed on me and I had to have a new one put in. I wasn't able to save anything to disc. Now my spell check does not work. I do have the disc for microsoft word 2000 but I have to put in the product ID from the cerificate of authenticity . The Product ID I have does not work there are only 20 letters and numbers and the form I have to fill out to down load this disc says I need 25 .
Hope someone can help me with this or lead me to a site where I can down load a free spell checker for windows 98.
I also lost alot of programs that was installed on my PC.
Is there a site that I might be able to go to to download some of the programs again.
Thanks Debi

Some of the programs ... like?

The solution is out there. [morning]

Hello again Debi

Help me out here, I'm having problems understanding your plight.

My hard drive failed on me and I had to have a new one put in. I wasn't able to save anything to disc. Now my spell check does not work

Have you had a preloaded HDD placed into your PC? Is it preloaded with an operating system and a MS Word programme?

I do have the disc for microsoft word 2000 but I have to put in the product ID from the cerificate of authenticity . The Product ID I have does not work there are only 20 letters and numbers

If you are attemting to load or reload Word 2000, you will need the product key (5 blocks of 5 alphanumeric characters). If you have the packaging that your Word 2000 came in, then you should also have the product key.

I don't understand ....and the form I have to fill out to down load this disc says I need 25 What form is this??

Hope someone can help me with this or lead me to a site where I can down load a free spell checker for windows 98.
I also lost alot of programs that was installed on my PC.
Is there a site that I might be able to go to to download some of the programs again.

The Spellchecker is part of Word and not part of Windows. Are you thinking in terms of a spellchecker for NOTEPAD or WORDPAD. Finally, without knowing exactly what programmes you lost in the crash, no one can advise you if they are available as Freeware, Demo or Shareware.
File not found. Should I fake it? (Y/N)

Please tell me if the answer I gave was helpful or a mere bus ride out. Without your feedback I won't know.

Concerning the certicate of authenticity all I have is a card with a product Id so I had assummmed this is what I needed to reinstall micro soft word. The disc came with the pc and its just in a white jacket with nothing on it.So I guess I don't have a product key .But it will not let me reinstall word without the product key. I don't have spell checker when I e-mail on msn exployer or outlook express. My husband was the one that set up the pc when we first got it 2 years ago but he has passed away so I don't know where the product key is. I have looked and can't find it.

Some of the programs that I know I have lost so far are micro office, money ,notepad, built in tech, compaq diagnoses.
you had mention if I had preloaded HHD this I dont know I admit I am still somewhat a cumputer dummie can you tell me where I might go on my Pc to find this so I could go too see if I have this and reload the programs.
Another question I have is I have the disc for msn 8. I had it installed before and I had no problems with it. MSN said I couldnt install it now because i only have 63 megabites and you need at least 64. I talked to the guy that worked on the PC and he said I do have 64 but it shows 63 because the card took up a megabite. He said if msn8 worked before it should work again. but msn said no way I was lucky it worked the first time. If you don't mind giving me your opion on this. The shop installed msn7.
Hope this is understandable this time

First things first, we're all computer dummies in one way or another, none of us know all the answers, and Yes, you definitely need a spell checker [smile] (only joking).

The hard disk drive you now have installed has got a lot on information on it. If you go to MY COMPUTER , normally top left on your screen, and right click it, a window called SYSTEM PROPERTIES should appear. On it you should be able to read the SYSTEM, REGISTERED TO & COMPUTER. Please write those details in your next post. Whilst you're there, click on PERFORMANCE and also include what's written there in that post. You now know as much as me [smile].

If you click START and go to PROGRAMS (that's Bill Gate's spelling of the word PROGRAMMES), you should see a list appear with the contents on this computer. Can you see one called MICROSOFT OFFICE which includes MICROSOFT WORD? If not, have a look a bit further on down and see if it's there. If it's there, are you able to open it? If so what happens? If not, please write down this 20 digit product ID(could this be a serial number that Microsoft could help out with?).

The disk or CD you have with WORD2000 on it, is that all that is on it or is there anything else?

Let's go that far for now and see what we're dealing with. I'm sure the other techies won't mind assisting here. File not found. Should I fake it? (Y/N)

I read you have compaq diagnoses, so I assume it is a Compaq.
Did it not come with a System Restore disk (a Red CD)?

In addition to Crusty's questions, what 64 megabytes are we talking about? Harddisk or RAM?
While you are in MY COMPUTER, right click the C: disk letter and select properties. List what is in there for Used space, available space and disk capacity.

The solution is out there. [morning]

I went on my computer then click on properties and system properties On general tab it reads microsoft windows 98 second edition 4.10.2222A..... When i clicked on perforance it reads memory 63% file system 32% virtual memory 32% disk compreeion not installed, pc card no pc card socket installed. I hope this was the information you where asking for. I went to start and then programs and there is nothing on the programs that has anything to do with microsoft office, microsoft ducuments or anything of that nature.
On the word cd itself it just reads microsoft word 2000 1983-1999 all right reserved does have 0199 part number X0391760.....on the card I have and I am not sure if this was suppose to go with the cd to word or not . It reads certificate of authenticity microsoft product ID 15300-OEM-0047514-81114.....you are right I really need my spell checker lol
I am a seller on e-bay and would like to be able to spell what I am selling the right way lol.
Thanks for helping Debi

I do have a disc that is blue and it reads quick restore there is a disc 1 and 2 what will that do?

Don't do anything with those disc yet !
I was just wondering if you had them. If there is any information on what it will restore, read it.
It is supposed to put your PC in the state as your purchased it, maybe even with Word pre-installed.
But, it also means you loose everything on there now!
Is this the PC you are working on now?
If so, keep this Blue CD as a last option. The solution is out there. [morning]

yes this is the pc that I am working on now. The information on the cd's says it will restore the PC as when I first bought it but..........I had a hard drive put in and a new modem put in.........not knowing much about computer my thinking is since I had a new hard drive put in what will it restore new as when I first bought the pc or new as when I had the hard drive put in which now I dont have any programs in the first place.
The place I had the hard drive put in they reinstalled windows 98 and exployer msn7 and outlook and for $59.95 my understanding was they where going to make the computer like it was when I first bought it. I did call the guy and he said how can we install programs when we dont know what programs you had we did the basic's I asked him if he would give me the key code to michosoft word at least so I could aleast get this back he said he is not allowed to.

Well, he is not allowed to give you a key for an MS Word version.
Is this guy from the place you bought the PC? If so, they should give you the key for the version you got with the PC (assuming this was included).
If he is not from that store or shop, he cannot do so.
In any case, for 60 $ he could at least make sure you receive good service and makes everything work.

You could easily use the restore cd's, but be prepared to loose all you have on there now. Make backups if you want to doe this.
Honestly, since you are not feeling confident to do that, I would recommend you don't for now.
That does not solve your problem, but it is a little tricky to help you over the Net like this.
If we let you use the restore CD's without knowing exactly what is going to be installed, you may feel we give you bad advice.
Also, your internet connection will not automatically work, and if you don't know how to do this, you will have more problems then now.

Anyone any other ideas? The solution is out there. [morning]

The place where I had the hard drive put in wasn't the place I bought the computer.I did take the word CD to him to show him it was not a copy .
I looked on e-bay and found someone had up for bidding the CD's of most of the programs I am missing and this included Microsoft word 2000. I e-mailed him aad asked him to make sure this had the key code he said it did all these CD's are new in package and never been opened. So I went ahead and bid on these thought it would be allot easier, he even e-mailed me a site that I could have a spell checker for free till I got the CD's to down load.
Anyway Thank You for taking your time in trying to help with this problem. Debi

If Word is installed, I'm pretty sure the Key actually is in the Registry somewhere - because I found my 25 digit key for M$ Office there when I just had to get it and I had no other options.
But working with the Registy is REAL tricky, and you have to be REAL careful, so ask for help if you decide to look ... that is, if you don't win that bid!! good luck (A bird in the hand greatly interferes with typing.)

Thanks for the tip. But I lost the program when my hard drive went out an they restalled the new one plus many other's programs I now if I did the quick restore I could probably get the program back but I will have to download again or save what I have now. Hopefully I will win that auction. I will know tomorrow.
Thanks again
Debi

I dont know if you got this anwser yet but when you install office of any sort. This is when the spell checker in outlook becomes active unless its xp sometimes xp can have a missing file csapi3t1.dll this file gets placed into program files\common files\microsoft shared\proof you will know if you are missing the file in xp because it gives you an error like spell checker has cause an error. I hope this helps you in a way

cala.. did you at least READ any of this post, it is Windows98, NOT XP.
Besides, there is no problem with Outlook or anything else, Debi just misses a key for her Word version, no more , no less.
She made a bid on eBay, so we'll see where she gets. The solution is out there. [morning]

Wanted eveyone one to know I won the Microsoft Word on E-bay
As soon as I get it I will try and download it. If I have any problems I will be back.
Once again thank all of you for all your help
Debi
