my slocket don't work quite right

i purchased a slocket (slot1 to socket370 converter) for my gateway destination. I also got a 950 celeron to put in it to replace the slow 300 P2. the problem is the system only recognizes the celeron as a 500 Pentium Pro. I have the front side bus set at 100MHz which i believe is what 950 celerons run at. it just doesn't recognize it, any suggestions would be great, thanks

Look at the adapter and see if it has jumpers on ir also.
What mother board do you have?

i already set the jumpers on the slocket to 100MHz bus, Gateway's site isn't telling me what kind of motherboard it is, what i can see is it is a intel slot1 motherboard that came with a 300 P2

You can use your BIOS version to track down the motherboard mfr. OR
with some boards, belarc advisor from belarc.com (free) will tell you what the mainboard is.
There are others...aida32...search for it if you like.

Documentation with it or didja' buy it on ebay?

Gateway's site isn't the easiest to find the info...but google probably could.
You could also look inside the case and look for silk-screening for the mfr. or trace the FCC Id #.

How is the motherboard gonna' supply the FSB the CPU needs?

Is the multiplier set to 9.5 X 100Mhz? Maybe a multiplier of 5 is the highest that mobo will support.

Try running wcpuid and see what speed the cpu is running? Maybe your bios is so old it won't post anything over a 500mhz P6? x::0:0::::

yes i bought it off of ebay and the only documentation is for the setting of jumpers which i have set at 100MHz fsb

Hi entities:
Your last post confirms what I had been guessing...it's a Tabor 440BX motherboard...(actually, I'm still guessing)

The thing is, such an arrangement (implementing an after-market 3rd-party kludge) may never return the right reponse when queried as to CPU speed.

I don't remember that board having jumpers for setting FSB (altho it's been awhile since I worked with one)...seems like it was all in the BIOS.

It's also possible the thing isn't working right (which is I'm sure not something you want to hear, but do need to consider)

It also could be a motherboard voltage issue (as in not supplying the correct voltage to get the most out of the chip)

A BIOS flash might help...once you get nailed down on what board it is and what to flash it with. (when you're absolutely certain)

You probably have an Intel 440BX chipset. If so, you'll want to make sure you use a quality slocket converter. Some work better than others. Here's a recent article on one that works quite well:

thanks for all the responses guys, i got it fixed and it detects it at 950 celeron like it should. i think the problem was that i downloaded the bios updates on my winxp system and unzipped them and put them on a disk, well that didn't work. today one of my roomates downloaded the bios update on his computer running win2000 unzipped it and put on a disk and it worked like a charm, i'm guessing xp somehow corrupted the update.
now that that works, the graphics out of that 2 MB video card suck, does anyone know any decent video cards that display in 640X480, that's the highest the 36" monitor can handle, i was looking at the GEFORCE2 TI 64 MB, anyone know if that displays in 640X480

We're glad you got it fixed and running like it should, especially when 1 buys (I know, I know) something ESPECIALLY electronics on Ebay and we get into that whipping ourselves 'cause we may have done something stupid rat-trapped how do I get out of this thing tailspin.
Point is, with the new slotket and video card you coulda' started again with something newer.
'Cause now you're gonna' discover something else that's bottle-necking and go upgrade that, too.
Pretty soon you'll have about $?00 new money in something worth (if you went out and tried to sell it) a lot less than that.

i wouldn't have spent any money on it but the destination is really cool, its got all kinds of AV inputs and outputs and you need it to watch TV and movies on the 36inch moniter it comes with. And i haven't spent much at all on it, i got the whole thing for $250, spent $65 for the 950 celeron, slocket, and heatsink, $14 for 128MB of RAM, and i'm looking at spending around $60 for a capable video card, that's not much at all in my opinion.

As for video cards, it depends on the type of slots that you have. Do you have an AGP slot? If so, you'll need to check its specs (like whether it runs at 1x, 2x, 4x and what voltages it requires).

Most AGP cards out there are "universal", meaning that they'll fit into just about any AGP slot. However, this doesn't guarantee that the voltage from the slot will match the card's requirements. You probably don't want to go any higher than a GeForce4MX 440 or Radeon 9000, if you can verify that they're compatible. Any higher, and the CPU/RAM will be the bottleneck and not the card!

Dunno what your using the machine for, but I just got a Radeon 7000 with 32MD of DDR for a machine with only PCI slots (not agp) and it works fine. New price is $49 or less most places.

If your not using the machine for gaming this pci card seems to work just fine.... x::0:0::::
