My PC switches off after 10 minutes in BIOS

Hi,

Ive just made my first PC - AMD 2600 XP on a MSI K7N2 Delta IL board.

I had a few problems with it overheating at first because I had put too much thermal compund on the cpu. After cleaning it and adding just a little bit the cpu temp dropped to about 40c read in the bios.

To check that it is ok I am running the PC in the bios for a while so I can keep an eye on the temperature of the cpu. After about 10 minutes (CPU still at 40c) the computer switches on and off and starts to reboot. About 5 seconds after it will swith off again and repeat this maybe 3 times. At this point it will take about a minute for it to automatically switch back on. If I wait an hour then I can get about 10 minutes until it switches off again.

The temp warning in the BIOS is set to 60c so it isnt even getting close to that. And im not sure if the motherboard has the capability to switch off at a certain temp, it just sounds an alert.

Anyone got any ideas?

Sounds to me like Power Supply problem. Got another to test it with? Ed

Hi Rich, Did you buy your XP2600+ as a 'Retail Box, or an 'OEM', (w/o Fan)? If Retail..., the fan that comes w/it is sufficient. Also, when you realized you had 'too much' thermal paste on them, did you clean both the bottom of the Heatsink and HeatSlug on top of the 'CPU Die' off 'COMPLETELY?' If you have gotten any paste on the 'L' Bridges..., it must be taken off 'carefully'. A little 'Elect. Contact Cleaner' on a soft piece of toweling will do the trick. A very "Thin" amount of paste, (esp., just covering the HeatSlug on CPU is all that is needed. 40C/104F is 'really cool' for your CPU. That's generally the Temp of 'My' Mainbord & Case. My O/C'ed XP2400+, CPU, (2100MHz), runs at 50C/122F to a Max of 55C/131F, w/no Freezes or BSOD, for over 9 Months now, and 'No' problems.

I think that it just might be the amoumt of time that your Staying in/Keeping it, (your CMOS/BIOS Setup), open..., w/o pushing F10 > 'Y' > Enter. I've built a few MSI, (Socket 370), M/B's..., No MSI, Socket 'A' boards yet, though. They would Revert to a Boot if I was changing something in 'Setup', (and happened to Stay, or keep it open too long), and w/o changing something for a while. Yor BIOS Setup is just for Changing some Parameters or Checking something like your CPU Temps/Voltages, etc. But 'it' fully expects you to "Exit w/o Saving" or (F10), "Save & Exit Setup" > 'Y', for Yes, and Enter, to re-boot. It was not made to Monitor your Temps or Voltages, for any "long length" of time.
I'd Pop off your Fan & Heatsink, and check the top of your CPU for Paste on the Heatslug, (Core), 'only'. None anywhere on the 'Green' Die, esp. the 'L' bridges.
Next get yourself a peice of software to monitor your temps, M/B & VCore Voltages and CPU temps. They have a lot of 'Freeware' to do this..., but one of the best is "MotherBoard Monitor". You can go over to:

..., and check it out. The "Max Die Temp" for your XP2600+ is 85C/185F. I gleaned this Info awhile ago, because I build alot of Socket 'A' Units, and I hated to keep going back to the AMD Site. Stats below...

Thanks for all your replies.

The problem seems to have fixed itself though! Im having some other odd problems now but im sure they arent hardware related.

Sometimes windows installer wont work and I get errors related to the RPC server when using IE.

Anywho, ill probably just reinstall Windows and the service packs.
