My new mobo 4

Ok guys I have a new RUNNING mobo, I started it up and in the setup I just chose the "fail-safe settings" option

For some reason or another, it will not boot up into XP home like I have...Im just kinda in the dark on this part maybe someone can throw out something to help me?? Thanks in advance fellas!!!!

So you have had the rig for about a year, but have recently just changed the motherboard?

Is it a different model motherboard or the same model motherboard which is just a direct replacement?

As myself and paparazi pointed out - if it is a new model mobo, then you will most likely have to get Windows reinstalled. Pain I know, I had to do the same thing, strange that your PC won't boot from CD though - maybe something to do with your burning options, you may have to specify that you are burning a bootable CD, depending on what burning software you use, because it looks like it isnt seeing the boot record on your CD.

Also, what was your reason for the new motherboard and who installed it?

You may just have some component that isnt fit properly, I would check all your memory is inserted correctly, IDE cables, PCI cards etc. - I know most of them can only go one way, but my floppy takes them both ways up and my PC doesn't like it when it is the wrong way round.

But really - if its a completely new Mobo then I'll bet you are gonna need a rebuild.

Ok! so you have several problems to overcome:

You don't have a copy of Windows XP? but do you have an original XP sticker on the case somewhere? if you haven't I'm afraid you will have to buy XP, if you have then you will need to physically borrow someones copy of XP and use your licence number.

In a non booting system the only thing you can do to retreive your important data is to remove your hard drive, set the jumpers to slave and install it in another machine as the slave then copy the information across.

To boot from a copy of XP you have to set the first boot device as "CDrom" in the boot sequence, this is done in the bios setup usually by pressing the delete button right at the beginning of post (all that black and white writing when you first press the button) that way it will find your "Bootable" copy of XP instead of trying to load the OS from the hard drive.

If I'm correct, the "BOOT LOOPING" is down to the fact your current "old" windows installation was not configured for your new motherboard, so hopefully once XP is clean installed your system will start without issues.

I hope my answers address all your problems but you certainly have your work cut out.

The motherboard is not a direct replacement, this mobo isnt really as good as my other one, I am waiting on my RMA on the other one. But if I can get this up and running I'll just leave this mobo in there. I have already told it to boot from a cd rom. Check my post above at 2:48 that is what I get when I try to boot from a cd. Im not COMPLETELY illiterate of the BIOS setup but I just cant seem to get it up a running. But i'll switch some of the components and let ya know.

Ok if you cant load from the cd, then your next step is still using a floppy. For you make a windows98 boot disc , load from it then just type D:setup.exe and hit enter. That will load from the cd. Ill give you a site for boot disc. Also a clean install is a complete wipe of the drive. It is when you let windows format and erase the entire drive and then install a "clean" version of windows on the drive. Meaning its installing windows on a blank drive so theres nothing to corrupt it software wise.

Your post at 2:48 confirms that your system is trying to boot from the CDROM but the system just isn't finding a bootable disk in that drive so it is just moving on to the next bootable device in your boot order list.
But obviously as I indicated, you need to get yourself sorted out with an XP disk first! FULL XP is BOOTABLE in other words the system senses that XP is in the drive and so gives the user the option to press any key to start the installation of XP OS.
On rare occasions a particular CDrom drive may not be bootable and so needs swapping for one that is.

I'm afraid I cannot help you with the XP, I just don't know where you are going to get one from if you can't borrow one.

OK! I got some progress! I bought a floppy drive for my laptop and a floppy drive for my big rig and I updated my bios...it updated it to the "F4" bios. Now it just tells me I need a boot disk which now I can use a floppy to boot. So now I need to know how to get and XP floppy boot disk. Could I get it from the Microsoft website??? Gosh guys thanks alot for all the help...

Well I tried to download a boot floppy disk, and a boot cd. Neither have worked, and I did change the boot priority.

When I choose to boot from the Cd with the boot from Microsofts website, after I choose if I want to boot into safe mode and so on, it flashes a blue screen for a split second then continues to restart itself.

When I choose to boot from the floppy disk, it tells me that it is a Non-system disk or disk error, and its the disk that I got from the

I'm happy i've gotten this far but I am getting my grandmas XP disk and im gonna try to use that

Ok so I tried a different disk and it goes to a blue screen and it tells me windows has been shut down and it gives me some technical information:

Ok I went to this and I copied the files onto a floppy and tried to boot. It said, the boot.ini file with incorrect and it said "booting from c:windows/"

I also noticed on some part of the boot up that on one of the screens it says

"IDE Channel 2. Master Disk HDD S.M.A.R.T.......Disabled"

I dont know for sure what this means but I think SMART is important, maybe i dunno im such a noob... Thanks fellas

Smart is just a feature that tells you when your hard drive is going bad or if its still in good status. Also on the boot disc just make a windows 98 floppy disc and have your bios set to boot from floppy first. Then you can load into the cd. Just boot from the windows 98 floppy boot disc and then when it ask if you want cdrom support tell it yes. Then type d:setup or e:setup depending on the drive name. That will boot from the cd. Also smart should be enabled.

That boot disc site I gave you has a program to make a windows 98 boot disc. Also to enable smart you do that in your bios. 3rd cd support will be on the windows 98 boot disc, as its booting from the disc it will ask weither you want to enable or not cd support.

Well there is not option to turn SMART on or off...


Alright so I got to the Win98 boot menu thingy, what am I supposed to do from here? I dont have the Windows Xp CD yet, do i need it?

Ok I CANNOT lose any of the information on my current hard drive. I get the Command prompt, is there any commands that I should do besides CHKDSK and Scandisk? Thanks

no thats fine. thats all you need. If you dont want to loose any data do not do a clean install nor do you ever need to type format. other than that you should be fine.

Well geez, I get a boot cd and when i try to run D:setup.exe it says "This program cannot be run in DOS mode." Dangit I thought I would have it this time! Any suggestions?
