Everytime i log off or re-boot, my icons are randomly placed somewhere different everytime. This is very frustrating and i don't know why it's happening. Any help would be appreciated. I'm using Win98SE
Hmm.. I had this once before - cant remember how i fixed it. If its checked - try unchecking "Auto Arrange" from the right-click menu on your desktop. - amgv84
do you have any programs that run on start up or anything that will cause a window to appear, even a large DOS window.
This can move the icons 'out of the way' for the window.
Have you got Active Desktop enabled?? Turn that off if so.
Also just try starting in safe mode, it might be the video display or something like that..... Jay~

put in here!!!???"
No solution, just to say I always get this after a defrag. That's no big deal, but every day? I've no idea but is your system constantly re-instating an old registry backup I wonder? My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.
I don't have any programs that come up like that. I disabled Active Desktop(i turned that on after it started happening hoping it might do something). I'll try the safe mode here when i get a chance. I don't think there is old registry or anything, i completely reformatted and installed just a week or two ago - but how would i check that? It even happens if i just log off my profile and log back in. Is there anyway it could be a virus?
Do you have multiple users set up on your computer? Check the users tab in the control panel. If there are multiple users make sure all users have the same settings. It is possible to set up different desktop setting for each user.
bertrude,
depending, this can be benificial or not.
Backup the registry and/or export the following keys:
go to Start>Run, type regedit. Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
Right-click on the Explorer key, choose new>DWORD value, name it NoSaveSettings. Right-click on that and type in the number 1.
