I have a Windows XP Home machine and when using Explorer to find a file and compress it I Right click on the file and that context menu comes up fine, when I scroll to Send To the desktop turns Blue(background color) and everything acts as though Explorer crashed, ie icons next to clock didn't return and the explorer window i was using is now closed. this is a huge pain in the arse so any help would be appreciated.

Some things i have already tried.

-uninstall any program that placed an icon in the send to menu
-removed all the items from the send to folder
-ran sfc /scannow
-reinstalled Windows XP home over itself

What sort of file(s) are you trying to compress, is it one type or any type of file?

Does the crash occur as soon as you highlight "Send to"?

What zip or compression software are you using?

To get further information about the error look in your Event viewer.

Look in the System or Application folder. You can get to the Event Viewer via right click My Computer icon and select Manage.

Any errors logged in the Event Viewer can be expanded by double clicking on the error line.

You probably have an artifact from a program that you uninstalled, or never worked. This app probably tried to add a shortcut to the "SendTo" folder.

The SendTo folder is similar to the Start Menu. It's a folder on the C: drive that contains shortcuts.

I've never had SendTo corruption, but this might work. Find the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\SendTo folder, and the C:\Documents and Settings\YourName\SendTo folder.

First, try renaming the folders. Reboot, and see if Windows re-creates them. (slim chance)

Inside each of these folders is a hidden "DESKTOP.INI" along with "shortcut" like files. Sometimes it is impossible to make Explorer see the desktop.ini file. I use a DOS window to find it. Look for possible problem apps, and comment out these lines in the desktop.ini Finally, go to a PC that is working and copy the contents of both SendTo folders.

Remember, I've never tried any of the above so I don't know if they are harmfull or what.

In response to the first question:
- What sort of file(s) are you trying to compress, is it one type or any type of file?
(a) the type of file doesn't matter, and the answer to your second question is it does crash as soon as you mouse over the 'Send To.'
- Zip compression software
(a) windows xp standard
- The Event viewer doesn't say anything at all about the problem

You can have a read of this link. It mentions several possible fixes that you could look at. However your type of fault might only be fixed by a reformat and fresh install of XP.

For what it is worth I have included the lines in my Send To folder's Desktop.ini file.

[LocalizedFileNames]
Mail Recipient.MAPIMail=@sendmail.dll,-4
Desktop (create shortcut).DeskLink=@sendmail.dll,-21
Compressed (zipped) Folder.ZFSendToTarget=@zipfldr.dll,-10148

first off, thank you for all your help. the problem has been solved by uninstalling a program placed there by kodak for one of their camara's. i uninstalled the kodak software and it works flawlessly now. thank you again.
