I'm using Windows 98 SE, and I've been having a problem with the 'My Documents' folder. If I save a file such as a text document inside a folder in the 'My Documents' folder, and if I click 'Start' > 'Documents' >, it shows the file with a unrecognized file icon in the start menu's 'Documents' folder. If I go to click on the file in the 'Documents' folder, Windows will give an error claiming the file does not exist. This only seems to be happening with folders that have spaces in them inside the 'My Documents' folder. Is there anyway to fix this problem??

Where you are checking your Documents in the Start menu is a history of last accessed files in the Windows\Documents folder. You can delete a file from Windows\Documents and it will still show on this list but you will get a message that it no longer exists if you try to access it from the Start menu. I have a shorcut for Windows, Control Panel and Documents on my taskbar for eaiser access.
I hope this helps. If I am wrong somebody let me know.

I don't think you understand. When you save a text document, Windows will add a shortcut to C:\Windows\Recent, which is where files are shown in the start menu's 'Documents' tab. I am trying to access the file through the start menu's 'Documents' tab, but Windows displays the file icon as a unrecognized file, and when it is clicked, Windows will display an error claiming the file does not exist even though it does. This is only happening when a file is stored in a folder in the 'My Documents' folder that has a space in it.

Just curious sm386, what was the solution? After reading this I had a couple ideas but I'm wondering what it was...

Did the file open when you went directly to My Documents from the desktop, w/o using the menus?

Actually, now the problem seems to be back. What was your solutions?

Well as deke40 alluded, that folder in your Start Menu is just a "shortcut" to your files, and it's pointing to whereever that file was the last time you opened it. If you've moved it since then, Windows doensn't keep track of where you put it.
Try opening the file directly from Windows Explorer, or My Computer, rather than the Start menu...

The word might appear, but the actual file and link are complelty gone....deleted....or moved to a different directory.
