My dns servers will not resolve domains from my virtual dns servers

The following is my set up.

mydomain.com

ns1.mydomain.com <---True DNS server
ns2.mydomain.com <---True DNS server

ns50.mydomain.com <---Virtual DNS server. Just a CNAME record to another dns server.

The problem I have is the true dns servers (ns1 and ns2) will not resolve domain names that are pointing to ns50 (virtual name server).

All other dns servers will resolve the domains, but not my two dns servers that are within the same domain as the virtual server.

Are you defining ns50 (CNAME) as a NS record? I believe that is illegal, check your startup logs.

I did get this resolved after working with it for about 6 hours last night.

When I changed ns50 and ns51 to A records everything started working. I must say that I still dont understand why the CNAME records did not work.

Thanks for the advise.

The main reason is that some nameservers only expect to take an A record as glue; they will do not expect a CNAME (per the RFC).

Now I believe some nameservers might work, but if you want ALL to work it better be an A record, as you found out.
