My Computer Can't See its Drives

I click on "my computer" and a window pops up with a tourch in it and searchs and doesn't stop

Is this a hardware problem or is there a possiblity it could be a software problem?

I installed Norton Antivirus and ZoneAlarm (firewall software) earlier on in the day, could it have affected any thing?

I had the exact same problem with Norton Internet Security and Windows XP. I found a fix on Norton's website online. Bascially they think it is some sort of timing issue when Windows loads up and NPF conflicts with some other program.

It's solved basically by changing when NIS loads up by moving it from the registry into the startup folder. The problem is explained in detail here:

I tried it and it worked perfectly for me but only after completing both fixes in the second link.

Norton says it may be due to a conflict with your network card if you are using high-speed internet. They say if you get its latest drivers, it may fix the problem. (But that didn't work for me.)

Is this happening just at Start Up or every time you open My Computer?

From your post it is more than likely either Zone Alarm or Norton is in conflict with XP or between themselves. The obvious thing to try is to uninstall one of them and see if the problem goes away. Once you have established the cause of the conflict you can start to solve it.

Another thing you can try is to check the following site and see if you have unrequired services running in the background which could be slowing your computer.

What other programs do you have loading at Start Up?

I have sometimes heard of this problem happening when your browser is searching for an internet connection.
