Hi,

I have a desktop running XP pro, which was installed using SYSPREP, along with 20 other PC's.
On this particular PC, quite frequently several applications/Windows will just open up - maybe 5 or 6, flash up on screen and then close themselves. This happens without clicking on the applications etc.

The PC IS virus free. None of the other PC's do this, so I syspect it could be hardware related. Any ideas please?

Regards,

What are the Windows that are opening and closing, in detail.

What does your system event logs state as possible problems?

Does the computer exhibit any other issues, such as logon failures or inability to map to printers or network shares?

Thanks for your reply:

windows that open are: Display properties, Programmes menu from Start menu. (will need to ask user for more details)

System Event log shows nothing

No other problems. All network drives map OK. No logon failures.

As a guess, there is a problem with the "Windows" iconic key on the keyboard. Try a different keybaord and see if the issue persists.

Thanks for reply.....tried a "known good keybaord", and still the same. Windows flash open and close on screen.....last window is Display Properties which stays open. All ther windows close......I'll have a closer look and see if I can catch all the other windows that open....

As local administrator create a new user on this machine. Then logon as the new user.

Does the problem repeat?

Will have to obtain PC from user, and test it while she is using her laptop. Will let you know outcome.

What I am trying to elicite is whether the issue is a corruption in the user profile. This seems likely either in the startup statements of the profile itself, or the individual user hive HKCU. If the problem disappears with the new temporary user, then the repair would be:
.

Thanks....will try that suggestion. Thanks for help.
