Dear All, I have seven regional databases for different companies who all do basically the same thing. I only want to use one mdw file because the uses of the system on a national level have access to all 7 regional versions. I don't want the user to have 7 different passwords. The only difference between the databases is the name, eg NWData, NEData, SEData etc. Ayone any ideas?

Cheers

I have a client that has many secured databases and they all use the same System.mdw file that is available on the network.

For a remote office we have installed a local copy of the System.mdw ( If is JUST a copy of the file but on their local server ). Then, when the cental System.mdw gets updated - we replace their old version with a new one.
NOTE: This will NOT work if you allow users to update their own passwords etc. They must go back to the single central System.mdw in order to do that and make the change permanent.

First off, why seven different databases? Why not put them all in one database with a field that indicates the region?

Second, G LS, are you really using "System.mdw"? That's a copy of the default mdw? If so, all someone would have to do to get into your database is delete that file and get a fresh copy on their machine of the default file an then they're in.

If the databases are at all related, and particularly if most people access multiple databases, I would definitely use the same MDW for them. (Just make sure it's one you've created.)

No, NO, NO

I wondered if my comments might get missunderstood when I wrote it that way.

It's the *****.mdw file - if you like. and just because the default is "SYSTEM.mdw" then the one that is in use gets referred to around here as the System's .mdw regardless of it's real name.

However, the point you raise Jeremy is worthwhile airing on a 'regular' basis for anyone newish to the technology because that security problem is easy to overlook if it is not pointed out to you.
So TAKE HEED y'all.

Cool. That makes more sense. I definitely was surprised, because I know what you know, and was pretty sure you wouldn't have done that!

Cheers.
