I just killed a machine, reformatted it, partitioned it, loaded win98se - created a directory and copied the files from the cd to the hdd.

When booting, it couldn't locate 2 of the drivers for "PCI System Management BUS" and PCI Ethernet Controller.

Also, the monitor settings won't allow me to change it - it's currently set at 640 by 480 px. The only colors it will allow are 16 and 2. For some reason it no longer allows the true bit high, etc.

I'm using DHCP for an Internet connection and it all worked fine yesterday, but can't currently connect.

I located the CD for the drivers and now it's not reading the CDROM drive. It read it to copy the O/S. I checked the cables and connections inside to make sure I didn't knock anything loose and they all seem to be tight.

Thanks for any advice.

First things first--you said that you copied the install files from CD to HDD...this suggests that your CDROM cabling, etc is fine. However, you can't use the cd to install drivers. SO.....

I would install your NIC drivers (PCI Ethernet Controller), as this is why you can't get online. If they are on CD, then perhaps you can download them from manufacturer's website (on a working PC) and put them on floppy (they should fit without ANY trouble).

Get yourself online, download and install your motherboard drivers. This should clear up the PCI System Management bus. See if your CDROM works.

You can't adjust your video because you don't have video drivers installed. If you go into device manager, you will see that you video driver is listed as something to the effect of "standard vga". Download them (or install them after you get the CD working).

If, after installing the MB drivers, you can't get the CDROM to work, then you might try the following.
1) boot to your boot disk, copy a few files to the hard drive (this ensures that everything is still hooked up correctly). Be sure to delete them later ;-)
2) boot into normal mode--not safe mode, right click 'my computer', select properties. On the 'Performance' tab, look to see if it says (a) your system is configured for optimal performance or (b) Drive D: is using msdos compatibility mode.
3) Post back with the results (especially on #2) and we'll go from there!

Good luck! Mudskipper

thanks, I'll give it a try in the morning and let you know how it goes.

I found the CD for the Motherboard. When I inserted it, it found the drivers needing installing and installed them. However, when I went to reboot, the machine wouldn't reboot stating that there were multiple dll files and vxd files missing. How can this be?

Question first--how did you get the CDROM drive going? Just curious!

Can you boot into Safe Mode still? (Tap f8 repeatedly when turning on the computer, at Startup Menu select safe mode, hit enter). If so, look in device manager and see what it says in there.

Also, what are the names of the vxd and dll files? Mudskipper

I whacked the machine again and when I reloaded the o/s, the CDROM worked. ?

Once I loaded the o/s, I inserted the drivers CD and it auto loaded the needed drivers.

When I rebooted for the last time, that is when I received the vxd and dll files missing - and then it locked up on me. I couldn't reboot in safe mode or at all. I pointed this out to my boss as I was trying to write the names down of the missing files and he just turned off the machine and said he'd take it in and have whomever look at it rather than go through the hassle. So in other words, I can't tell you what files were missing.

I'm sure I'll run into the problem again, and still won't know what's going on.

Thanks for your help though.

Sorry that we did not get it all taken care of for you before the snatched your computer :) . I have a few theories, but I guess that it is all moot.

Good luck with it! Mudskipper
