I had a system crash this morning and have had to perform an XP system restore throughout the day and finally have had to reinstall MS OFFICE 97. Now I have multiple errors cropping up.

1. Can't use the Link Table Mgr. (Error- ActiveX component can't create object.)

2. Set db = CurrentDB (Error-function or interface marked as restricted, or the function uses an automation type not supported in visual basic.)

3. File menu Link or Import External Database. The dropdown box that usually has all of the database types that can be imported or linked to now only has MS ACCESS and ODBC databases. The rest are missing.

My Tools/References have the following selected.
V B for Applications, MS ACCESS 8.0 Object Library, and MS DAO 3.6 Object Library.

I have completed uninstalled MS OFFICE 97. Reinstalled with all features selected in the ACCESS selection. Then I have installed the SR-2 update. Initially I had a problem with the Licensing problem which was resolved with a posted fix concerning the hatten.ttf file. But, now I am basically out of business until I can get this thing working again.

TT experts please come to the rescue. Bob Scriver

Hi Bob,

weekend activities are probably keeping the hardcore members from coming to the rescue that you absolutely deserve.

My XP experience is very limited, but I looked up your issues in MS's knowledgebase and the results I got seem to point to a problem with files not being registered properly.

This is what found using the two error messages you got:

If XP pro is as picky about the users and their administrative rights as Win2k, did you log on appropriately?
I forgot about that too often myself and encountered a very rich variety of error messages depending on the particular program.

I'll be hanging out here for a while, so let me know if or how I can help you in this unpleasant matter.

You're not alone,

TomCologne

TomCologne: You are a savior. I completely overlooked this one. I forgot that I had installed both Office 97 and Office 2000(Word and Access only) but into a different directory so that I could develope in both platforms. That was it. After I registeed the DAO 3.51, deselected 3.60, and selected 3.51 in References that was it.

Boy, sometimes can't see the forest for the trees. I have a database that is due to be completed tomorrow at noon for installation and have not been able to work on it all day long.

I do owe you one. Many thanks. Bob Scriver

TomCologne: Maybe I spoke a little too soon. This solution fixed the error messages with the DAO references. But, the problem of the database filters missing when I try to link or import external databases is still a problem. I am only able to see MS ACCESS or ODBC database types. No excel, FoxPro, etc., etc.

Any ideas? Bob Scriver

Hey Bob,

sorry that there's still a problem left. Since those errors have not ocurred in my past, I can't come up with an idea directly; my gut feeling is that it still is a registration issue, but I'll try to find out more right now and be hopefully back soon.

'til then

Tom

Bob,
I'm back with an intermediate result:
Not all drivers are installed by default>

This may explain some missing ODBC sources, but not the missing Excel connection.

Unfortunately, any second IE window keeps crashing on me, which slows down my research, but I'll keep searching.

Tom

Bob,

some research did not return specific results, that's why I am going back to a basic troubleshooting, 'forest for the trees' approach:

What does the ODBC Data Source Administrator list? (Win2k: Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Data Sources)
There are a couple of tabs, User DSN , System DSN , etc and Drivers (installed odbc drivers).

The User DSN will display something like: dBase Filess,..FoxPro, and let you edit the settings, whereas the Drivers tab is a list only.

If the drivers you need are not listed in the user's DSN tab, use the 'Add...' button to install them manually.

Hope this helps,

Tom

Hello Tom: I have solved my problem with the ACCESS 97 file types missing for Import. The following Microsoft paper covers the problem. Somehow the .dll files for Excel, Text, and other databases needed to be reinstalled. But, when they are corrupted you can't deselect them to get them reinstalled. You must go into your files and rename them and then reinstall the Data ACCESS files. See the link below for the specifics. I am back up and running trying to make a buck again.
