Multiple Failed WindowsUpdates on NEW computer 1

Hello!

We bought a new computer with a clean install of Windows XP from Dell (Optiplex 755). Before I turn the PC over to our employees I always get all the latest windows updates. However, Automatic Updates is reporting the following:

The following updates were not installed:

Cumulative Security Update for ActiveX Killbits for Windows XP (KB950760)
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 for Windows XP (KB950759)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB950762)
Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 (KB928366)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB951698)
Windows Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - June 2008 (KB890830)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB951376)

Why are these 7 updates not installing? I have never had this problem before on any other workstation in the company.

I would take a look at the Update log to see if it has any clues as to why they are not installing... location: C:\windows\WindowsUpdate.log

try to run Windows Update again, or start from scratch, meaning redo the OS, since it is a new build there would be no real loss except time...

Also check to see if they were already installed ( the log should tell you that)..I am assuming you ran the updates as administrator??

Yep, all the updates were done on an administrative account.

I initiated another attempt to install these same updates via Automatic updates and took note of where the new log entries were being generated in the C:\windows\WindowsUpdate.log
file. There was a ton of stuff that showed up in there, but this in particular caught my eye:

(I eliminated the time stamps to make it easier to read)

Misc Logging initialized (build: 7.0.6000.381, tz: -0700)
Misc = Process: C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe
AUClnt FATAL: Error: 0x80004002. wuauclt handler: failed to spawn COM server
Handler FATAL: 0x80004002: ERROR: Remote update handler container process created (PID: 1848), but exited before signaling event
Agent * WARNING: Exit code = 0x80004002

I would REALLY like to avoid reinstalling XP just for this issue since I spent quite a bit of time getting things customized for this user.

Can I delete the windows update files associated with these patches and force the system to re-download them from windowsupdate.com bypassing the Automatic updates feature?

Method 1:

Install the current Update-Agent:

Download Windows Update Agent

Start the Installation using Start --> Run -->

"WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" /wuforce [ENTER]



Method 2:

Reset the Windows Update Information using "winUpdRstre.exe"
