It is not an uncommon occurance that my Computer will report an Explorer or IExplore illegal operation. What could be the most likely source of these problems? I have an P500 w/64 MB Ram and a GeForce 1 Card.

HI,

I would check in the Device Manager under Safe Mode to see if you have multiple drivers installed for the devices installed on your computer.

You won't see multiple drivers while in regular mode, you have to go into Safe Mode.

If you do have multiple drivers in video, hard drive, cdrom, devices like that, then delete ALL of them. But I wouldn't touch the drivers under system.

When you reboot your computer, they will automatically be reinstalled, and then you will have less problems.

Also, have you run scandisk and defrag lately? Have you empty your temp directory?? There are always a little housekeeping you need to do to keep it running smoother. I like to run scandisk about once a week and defrag analysis about once a month.

Things to think about.

Mary :)

It can also be a corrupt .dll or two causing the crashes. What exactly, are the error messages? Hit the "Details" button the next time it happens, and let us know. We can decypher the message to suggest the appropriate fix, if we know what's going wrong.
Illegal Operations come in so many flavors, it's impossible to determine a course of action without some specifics. Cheers,

OK, PDM.dll is not a standard part of windows, thus it must be a program that's on your hard drive, probably one that's in the taskbar. Personal Data management, appointment reminder or somesuch, is my guess. Try reinstalling the program, or search the manufacturer's webiste for updates, known conflicts/issues using this program. kernel32.dll errors are the most common, as the kernel contains (or runs) lots of other processes.
The easiest fix for this particular error is to run system file checker ( Start > Run > type in SFC > Open) and choose to extract one file. Browse for kernel32.dll in the c:\windows\system folder and extract it from the Windows CD, then restart when prompted.
I admit, it won't fix ALL kernel32.dll errors, but does cure quite a few. Sometimes something as silly as changing your mouse can cause the error to stop. Cheers,
Jim
