Please help......

I have recently added agnitum outpost firewall pro and avast internet security on my system - what a mistake!!!

Have rebooted system only to find that neither of the afore mentioned are present AND all of my icons in "control panel" are INVISIBLE????? - although system is showing that there are actually 35 items present.

All settings are set at correct values (i.e. windows default)and no matter what I do, I cannot see them.

Also my screen is freezing and my mouse has a mind of its own in as much as I am having to use the cursor and tab keys to get around the damn thing!!
now on my laptop having disconnected my desktop from the internet and need help fast please.

Have already looked at thread748-240002 but can't see anything that can help me on this one???

Thanks in advance

Can you system restore back to before you did those updates?

If not, can you restore registry to date before you did those updates. To do this, boot from ME boot floppy ( if you need to create one) and at the A: prompt, type scanreg /restore. This should list a number of available registry backup date & times. Pick one from before the install.

Hello and thanks for your reply.

Unfortunately, I had (in my wisdom....NOT) turned system restore off as for some reason it would never restore back to ANY point showing as available.

So....as I can't see my icons in control panel, I don't have the facility to click on system folder to restart it....unless you have a tip on finding it through cmd prompt???

For the rest of your advice, I will attempt that tonight and will post my findings in this thread.

Thanks for info........here goes..[hourglass]

as far as i am aware, all patches and updates were current up to support ending from microsoft....

....not having much luck with registry either...looks like a clean install methinks

do you mean going back to earlier registry is making no difference?

Have you tried Safe Mode - and if it will boot into that, uninstalling agnitum and avast?

was having trouble with files brought down from bootdisk.com.

Damaged pc is winme but laptop is xphome - each file I brought down and tried to extract to put onto floppy (or cdrom as laptop doesn't have floppy drive) was showing as corrupt???

First 3 were winrar - which isn't an option on desktop 'cos it wasn't installed.

Haven't had time to venture further due to work commitments, but am hoping to have it up and running before xmas.

Safe mode boots up ok but still have problems with non-responsive mouse / sluggish response.[ponder]

You need to run the executable from bootdisk.com in a machine with a floppy drive (eg, with blank floppy in. It creates the botdisk (from image in the executable).

But if you have safe mode in ME, can you get into add/remove programs - there's option there to create a startup disk. Also, could remove problem progams. You can navigate around windows with just the keyboard if mouse is not working.

figured as much with bootdisk...

yes I can get into add/remove......didn't give a thought to being able to create disk from here. Thanks for pointer, will do that today.

have already given up on mouse for time being [mad]
It's been called a few other things besides that as well - I can tell you [smile].
