Multiple detail sections and multiple columns won't work

I've successfully formatted a report to print detail lines using multiple columns with the "Format Groups with mutltiple columns" feature. It prints 3 columns and has a "major" and a "minor" grouping. Now I'm trying to add a second detail line if pressent (similar concept to a variable number of address lines). When I add the second detail section the "Format Groups with multipe columns" feature goes away and it now gives me page breaks.

I'm using CR 8.5 developer with and Access 2000 database. I'm new at using Crystal Reports and I don't want to spin my wheels trying to do this if it won't let me.

Don't try to format each band seperately. It'll be in the main details section.

I went to the details section and it was no longer an option to Format Groups with mutltiple columns.
