Multiple client servers in Enterprise Manager

I have several clients that each have a SQL 2000 server running, each having the same server name like SERVER1, and each having the same IP address like 192.168.1.2. I use VPN to connect to individual servers to perform various tasks.

How can I get these servers all registered in Enterprise Manager at the same time?

I have tried creating sub-groups but I still get the "A server with this name already exists" error when trying to add the second server named server1. Same problem when adding the IP address instead of the server name.

There is more than one server you are accessing with the same IP address? Since the IP is the universal address used to find a given server, this is not logically possible. Can you tell me a bit more about the environment you are working in and maybe we can help you make sense of what would work for you?

Thanks for your response. The ip addresses are internal non-routable addresses. When I VPN into the customer network I am assigned an address like 192.168.1.89 which will allow me to communicate with the SQL server on the internal address of 192.168.1.2.

Outside routable ip address don't apply in this situation.

Hope that clears it up a bit.

How do applications communicate with these servers? Could you try using the actual routable addresses or those fail in the VPN?

I use a VPN into my office but mine allows me to connect to my servers using their routable addresses.

These servers generally are locked down behind a firewall and do not have a routable address (to minimize hacker attempts). VPN is the only way in from the outside world.
