Does anybody know how to get two network cards to talk to each other in Windows NT

Why would you need to get them to talk to each other on a multi homed system?<br>

On the install or in net neigh props, add both cards. Ensure that the IRQs are different or you will get problems. Ensure that TCP IP (or your default protocol of you are not using IP - but I recommend it) is loaded. Bind it to each card. Set one card as 192.168.0.1 and the other card as 192.168.0.2 net mask in each case is 255.255.255.0 (24 bit). Now ping each one in turn from the server. Assuming that works, ping each one from the network.<br>

If you are trying to use the system as a router, you need to check the "Enable IP Forwarding" box on the Routing section of the TCP/IP protocol properties.

Thanks for the reply, but I did all of that and more. I can ping each card at the server but not from the network. I check "IP forwarding" and that didn't improve the issue. Let me clarify my enviroment, I am running two network cards in the one server connected to two seperate hubs. The hubs are not connected to each other. Believe me I don't agree with this approach but the powers that be want it this way. This is why I am trying to figure out how to multihome to network cards on the server. Any further information would be appreciated<br>

Are the two cards on two separate networks? Does the subnet mask on each isolate each network?

Are you using crossed cables for the servers? How are the ws getting their IP info? Manually or DHCP? Can the workstations on hub1 talk to each other?<br>

If you want the hubs to be separate from each other then uncheck IP forwarding otherwise they may as well be on the same hub!<br>

I have a very similar problem<br>
My NT4 server has a dual port net card installed.<br>

To one port I have a WIN98 workstation connected via a crossover cable and to the other a Novell 4.11 server also via crossover cable.<br>

From my NT box I can ping both the other boxes but I cannot ping my novell box from my workstation or visa versa.<br>
<br>
I know the simple answer is to buy a hub but that is not the point I would like to try and understand how to do this.<br>

IP addressing is as follows<br>
NT port 1 192.168.100.1<br>
NT port 2 192.168.100.2<br>
Novell 192.168.100.15<br>

Also I cannot ping the second port (192.168.100.2)on the NT box from my workstation.<br>
<br>
NT server running DHCP and currently assigned address to workstation is 192.168.100.32<br>

Any Ideas

Greg, Have you got IP forwarding running on the NT box? Without it the WS won't talk to Novell.<br>
What netmask have you got? All of them should be 24 bit (255.255.255.0).<br>
If the NT Server can ping the WS but not back, but you are getting a DHCP address, sounds like a net mask issue. But check the diags on the net card just in case.<br>

Also check your transport protocols are correct. <br>
<br>
If all else fails, load NetBEUI temporarily on WS and server and see what happens..<br>

I'm back....<br>
My NT box network cards are plugged into two sperated hubs. You could define this as two indivdual networks. I can ping the Server from workstations with no problem but I can't ping other workstations on the seperate hubs. I have a DHCP server running. My subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 for both network cards. I do have IP forwarding check but I was instructed to have that on so that the IP's would be routed over to the other network card.

As the address is class C I am using the default <br>
netmask of 255.255.255.0 on all IP's<br>
The WS can Ping the NT port 1, its the port 2 that it cant ping.<br>
The issue is not masking or the network cards themselves but to get two cards in an NT server to perform as though they are on the same network and pass traffic between them.<br>

a bit frustrating, basically what you are saying is that you cant get from one hub to the other because the two cards in the NT server dont seem to think they are on the same network. (If this was a Novell server you would not have the problem)
