Multi-processor to single processor restore

We have a NT 4.0 server that is currently multi-processor. We want to archive the current system with Symantec Ghost to a single processor machine. However, if the image is restored to the single processor machine, a blue screen is shown at bootup stating a MPS and HAL.DLL error (I assume from it only detecting one processor).

I read a MSKB article that said to copy the HAL.DLL from a single processor setup, but the boot disks I am using can not access NTFS partitions. I found a READNTFS bootdisk frmo bootdisks.com but it can only read, not write.

Is there a way to do this? Either by copying the file, by another means, or even making the current system only see one processor, then imaging it?

Thanks,
Mike

That program will only read from the NTFS drive. In the case above I need to be able to write to the NTFS drive.

Thanks,
Mike

Doesn't ghost explorer allow you to access the images? Perhaps you can open the image (make a backup of them 1st) change the files and dump the image on the new server again?

You need to change the original server to single processor first. Then do the archive.

look on compaq's site for SP23649. It is a program to switch hal's from multi to single or single to multi. It even adds a selection to the boot.ini so you can change hal's at bootup.

Hope that helps!
