Multi boot screen driving me nuts!! 1

After a failed attempt at adding 98SE to my XP Pro machine i've been left with a multi boot screen at start up.
It contains 2 entrys for Windows(default). One boots to my re-installed operating system but the other which is always highlighted leads to an error message where do I remove or edit this screen.

All suggestions gratefully received.

right-click My Computer, Properties, Advanced, startup and Recovery - Settings

1. Set the "Default Operating System" box to your Windows XP installation. (You can scroll the choices);

2. Set the "Time to display list of operating systems" to 0 (zero)

Click OK and you are done.

To be more thorough, click on Settings button again.
Click the Edit button to manually edit your list of operating systems.

You now have a notepad session of your boot.ini file. Remove the line for the faulty Win98 installation, under the subhead "Operating Systems". Delete the line referring to your Windows 9x installation. File, Save your changes.

Bcastner, thanks for the reply I had found some reference to this in the help files. The default operating system is blank clicking or scrolling turns it blue.The notepad reads

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=C:\
[operating systems]

The error on the multi boot screen (white on black) reads

I/O Error accessing boot sector file
multi(0)disc(0)rdisk(0)partition(1) \BOOTSECT.DOS

Copy/paste this (with the edit function as discussed above) so that the boot.ini looks like:

[boot loader]
timeout=0
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

If no joy from the above, use Recovery Console and its bootcfg command to rebuild the boot.ini:
