I have a problem opening a number of programmes and the following error message comes up:

"The procedure entry point ??_U@YAPAXI@Z could not be found in the dynamic link library MSVCRT.dll"

Does anyone know what it means and any tips to rectify without re-installing OS?

It likely means you have a virus.

Run at least two online virus scans (My choice: Trend Micro Housecall and Panda) from smah's FAQ: faq760-3862

I thought about that and I have run Sophos Anti-Virus several times and it comes up with about 7 or 8 corrupt files in the system32\dllcache folder. Could this be something to do with it?

Likely.

"The procedure entry point ??_U@YAPAXI@Z" error is the tipoff. I can tell you that there is no such entry point.

Should I find the corrupt files and delete them then or just back up and re-install the OS?

Let the antivirus software try to deal with the problem first.

I tried Trend Housecall, it gave me a virus and then Panda but it locked up on me. I have also run Sophos and it has not found anything after getting rid of the aforementioned virus. The files are still corrupt though, are they necessary for startup, programmes?

They are (some repeated more than once in different folders):

triedit.dll
ieshwiz.dll
perfmon.exe
idq.dll
webhits.dll

They are in as I said various folders but all within the system32 command line. (eg. Folder dllcache or just winnt
