Hello all,

we have an MSSQL 2000 SP4 on a W2K Server SP4. For a few weeks now we have troubles with the MSSQLSERVER Service, which shut down once or several a day. It comes up again suddenly by itself, but i cannot see what the reason is. For the same time periode the server also reboots itself from time to time, i guess these two issues have a connection. In the error- and event log is nothing reportet, which gives mi a clue to this behaviour.
We also did a full memory (RAM) test and also stopped the virus scan "auto-protect" on this machine.

Does anybody has a hint how to trace this problem?

many thanks
dani

What else if reported in the System and Application logs?

Are you having a drive failure, a heat problem, a fan failure?

hi,

thats the strange thing... nothing which would lead us to the problem is reportet within the system- and application logs. Only after reboot there are information entries about starting services etc.

A full disk check is planed but not done yet.

What i noticed is, that the process sqlserver.exe catches continually more memory. It shoulden't be a problem as it is on 500MB after two days and we have 4GB, but maybe i try to limit this in the enterprice manager.

thanks
dani

Hi medmed,

SQL will do that (take memory as and when it needs it), but depending on what version you are running, your 4GB should be plenty. If you're on 2000 Std edition, it can't go over 2GB.

Rgds,

M.
