All my Windows XP Pro systems run MSSQLSERVER when they boot. Is this program necessary and what does it do?

MSSQLSERVER is a service that Microsoft SQL Server uses. There is a scaled down version of SQL Server called MSDE that is the desktop equivalent of SQL Server.

Several desktop apps use MSDE to store data. The newer versions of office install an instance of MSDE and some backup software applications use MSDE to store things as well.

By disabling the MSSQLSERVER service, these applications may no longer work as desired.

You can disable it and see if anything stops working....if you have problems, just start it again.

Thanks,
Andrew
