Why is it that on some computers in my district (I am a systems analyst for a school district)are displaying the wrong office icons for there respective programs? Like for example the Word icon is shown on the desktop, but when clicked, excel or powerpoint will open? These icons are not located on the shortcut toolbar but either on the desktop or the quick launch bar. Thanks!!

People can monkey around and do amazing things to icons and their respective mappings.
I have to correct things like this frequently when I go out in the field. Best thing to do is either bite the bullet and right click to Properties and correct the mapping for the icon, or right click to properties and reassign the appropriate icon to the mapping.
If someone can offer a fix for user meddling, I'd certainly like to hear it.

Thanks for the response. I get alot of meddling since I mainly work out of a high school but in this case of the wrong icons being displayed,it happened on my boss'secretarys machine.I checked MS Technet and couldnt find anything either....

Just found this, in case you're into registry tweaking:

Tip: If your desktop Icons keep changing to incorrect Icons after you have been in Windows for awhile try this. Add the value and value name "Max Cached Icons"="8000" to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer, then reboot and your Icons should remain on your desktop unchanged.
