Bit of a strange one..

MSN messenger wouldnt sign in on one of the PCs in the office.

But it works fine on mine. Firewall settings, internet access settings etc are the same.

What i have tried:

- Changing client IP
- Removing additional entries to hosts file
- Reinstalling messenger

The same user cannot access webmessenger, or hotmail, and I can. Nothing appears to be blocking it, and ive disabled Windows firewall to try and see what the problem is.

Microsoft help isnt too helpful either!

Any info appreciated, thanks!

So there was a proxy setting in IE...

i've removed that, hotmail and webmessenger now work, but not MSN messenger itself...

i'm a bit stumped!

In connection settings in Messenger, when you test proxy it says "you can connect", when you test TCP, the test fails.

when you launch the program (msn msgr) do you get any messages? or just non-response?

There is a message, which says that it cannot connect, and has tried several times, and to check that a firewall is not blocking it.

Firewall is definatley not the issue though!

Quite stumped really - i assume that webmessenger and the msn client are accessing the same server?

The Error Code is 80048820, when troubleshoot is selected, the tests all show as sucessful!

Found out that he had recently updated to 7.5, which is when the trobule started.

I have rolled back to version 7.0 - and it's now working again.

I also followed these tips:

1. The date on your computer needs to be set properly -- double click the clock verify that
the time and date are set.
2. If your password information is not saved, verify that you are typing it in with the
correct case (uppercase or lowercase).
3. Change your password @ to
something smaller (under 10-12 characters), then try signing in again.
4. If you use a firewall (like ZoneAlarm, Norton Internet Security etc. ), it's possible
that Messenger doesn't have the correct rights to access the Internet, especially since you
upgraded. You may need to re/add Messenger to the allowed list of programs in your firewall
if this is the case.
5. If you disabled your firewall in the past, it still may be blocking Messenger -- try
restarting it and see if that helps the situation. You also might try uninstalling an
installed firewall, to verify that it isn't causing a problem (even if it is disabled).
6. Clear your IE cache and cookies -- open Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, then
Internet Options, then click the Delete Files button, and when that's complete click the
Delete Cookies button.
7. Check your IE Security settings -- open Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, then
Internet Options, then Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section, and verify that "Check
for server certificate revocation" is unchecked. Also verify that 'Use SSL 2.0' and Use SSL
3.0' is checked, then click OK.
8. Click Start, then Run, and enter the following:
regsvr32 softpub.dll
then click OK
and do the same for the following:
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll

Maybe this might help somebody else.

As an ISP i will first tell you that several times you need to add *msn and *msn messenger, to the firewall or antivirus software to be allowed full access to the internet (please keep in mind that these are 2 different softwares and need to be entered separately)

All you had Cyberspace was a bad download
go to and download the new messenger from there THIS WILL ALWAYS SAVE YOU TONS OF TROUBLE!

PLEASE DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE CLICK YES WHEN ASKED TO UPDATE TO NEWER VERSION WHEN YOU SIGN IN TO MSN SOFTWARE AS YOU WILL SAVE YOURSELF AND ME A LOT OF TROUBLE

I'D REALLY APPRECIATE THAT! :p

ALWAYS GO TO THE SITE AND DOWNLOAD ALL NEW SOFTWARE AND NEWER VERSIONS OF BOTH MESSENGER AND MSN

GOOD LUCK GUYS!
