MSN Messenger has encountered a problem and needs to close

Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if I could get some help on this issue cause I can't seem to solve this myself. I have recently been infected with spyware/adware. Ran Spysweeper, Ewido and SAS. However after getting rid of most of it, I can't seem to access MSN messenger now. I can log in fine but soon after it states that MSN Messenger has encountered a problem and will need to close. Does anybody know whats causing this and could they please help me out?

I really appreciate you helping me out. However, my MSN Messenger still doesn't work. I have deleted the downgrader and Msn Plus and upgraded to the new Windows live Messenger but it still encounters the same problem. Any ideas?

I thought I had gotten rid of the WinAntiVirus 2006 Popups and etc. but just now they have come back. How do I get rid of them once and for all?

You still have a couple of glitches in the log:-

While you are in Safe Mode, run Ewido and SpySweeper and delete everything they flag up.

You'll also need to disable your System Restore to flush it, after a reboot it can be re-enabled.



I think the reason you can't get to MSN is that your hosts file has been altered - see the bottom of the earlier linked Sophos page > Advanced.

To access your hosts file:-

   1. Navigate to the following location:

          * Windows 95/98/Me:
            %Windir%
          * Windows NT/2000/XP:
            %Windir%\System32\drivers\etc

            Notes:
          * The location of the hosts file may vary and some computers may not have this file. There may also be multiple copies of this file in different locations. If the file is not located in these folders, search your disk drives for the hosts file, and then complete the following steps for each instance found.
          * %Windir% is a variable that refers to the Windows installation folder. By default, this is C:\Windows (Windows 95/98/Me/XP) or C:\Winnt (Windows NT/2000).

   2. Double-click the hosts file.
   3. If necessary, deselect the "Always use this program to open this program" check box.
   4. Scroll through the list of programs and double-click Notepad.
   5. When the file opens, delete all the entries added by the risk. (See the Technical Details section for a complete list of entries.)
   6. Close Notepad and save your changes when prompted.

Your Antivirus/Antispyware/firewall may need to be reinstalled - the worm might have crippled them.
