MSGSRV32 not responding

system: Asus a7v333-x/lan motherboard, AMD 2400+ ,(2) 512m of Kingston 2700/333 ddr memory, Asus v8170 ddr-t GeForce 4 mx-440-se,120gig Maxtor HD,spar q removable,mitsumi cd-rom,350w power supply.
Installed Win ME,motherboard drivers,video card drivers (all latest from web sites). Upon boot up with video card drivers installed...system halts(freezes) at wallpaper screen...ctrl+alt+del yields "msgsrv32(not responding)"...followed instructions on Microsoft website to no avail. Checked through other web sites, still no answers. When Standard PCI Graphics Adapter switched to, from regular drivers, system functions...no lock ups. No conflicts in system, no flags, nothing obvious. Tried the " msconfig" solutions, again to no avail. Any help would be appreciated.Thanks.

Throw out ME and get a real OS such as W2k or XP. 98SE may be a step backwards from ME time wise, but is also a better OS than ME. The other OS's have good drivers for most hardware. Good luck, and Happy Computing

MS has indicated that the error is probably due to a faulty sound driver. Does the motherboard support the C-media sound chip?

although the article applies to 9x it may be the same for ME. Who knows since MS doesn't support ME much any more...

I have seen a simiilar problem on two systems - one ME and one 98SE. In both instances, when I ctrl+alt+del a second time, several other non-responsive programs were indicated.

The common one was 'crtcclient'. Research led to the suggestion to remove MSN Messenger 4.6 (now using 'Trillian') and the non-responsive issues went away on both systems. On the 98SE machine, I also removed QT Player (QuickTime) since that one was also non-responsive as well.

Thankyou for the help so far...nothing is working still. I have tried an AGP GeForce 2 card....same problem....I have tried a PCI GeForce 2 card, again, same problem. I have finally been able to keep the system running...with a PCI Trident chip set card TGUI 9680...no 3D. I have a new card on order using the ATI chips. I do not feel the problem is with the video card itself or the AGP slot, but along the lines of chip/bios incompatibilities involving the MB. I put the Geforce 4 in another computer, no problems at all. I feel that there may be a problem with the drivers from Asus. I have tried different drivers from other video card manufacturers, nVidia,Asus,PNY,Leadtek, etc. all to no avail. I am still waiting to hear back from Asus as to a course of action. Any other suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

Have you tried updating the AGP drivers on your system? When i updated my video card, my machine required updated AGP drivers. Good luck, and Happy Computing
