MSDE will not remove

I have an app that uses MSDE. Recently we loaded it on a site machine and the connection to our site was unsucessful so I tried to re-install. I reinstalled and everything was gla. When I tried to put service pack in place it failed because there were two instances running. I know you say no way to even load with one present but it's there. The problem is I can't remove in Add/remove programs. I went into registry and removed all I could find and took out a SQL entry that screwed up the OS. Everytime I boot up it say there is a problem with SQL and I still can't remove the instance nor re-install my program. Any ideas? Do I need to re-install OS (2000 PRo with SQL 2000. Thanks

It sounds like some other application had MSDE already installed. Did you check that possibility? You can go to Microsoft's web site,

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/?url=/technet/security/msdeapps.asp

and find a list of applications that install MSDE. The instance you removed, may have 'belonged' to another application.
