Could one of you fine people recommend a utility for cleaning up the startup list of unchecked items in W98.

Nope, but I point you to the registry key where you can remove them.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WIndows\CurrentVersion\Run

Delete those you wish to purge...you may have to look in RunOnce, etc. as well, but not likely...
 
Carrr is correct, almost.
The unchecked items are moved to the "Run-" section.
If you are sure you will not use these again, then go ahead and delete the various entries under that heading.
