In the STARTUP tab of MSCONFIG, some commands have " at beginning and end. Others do not.

What is their significance?

-LB

Usually commands which include spaces will be enclosed in "".

I understand that use of "". But that is not the case here. The COMMAND column is quite long and the string of data is lengthy. But there are no spaces in them nor in the other ones without ".

I wondered if they were "commented out" or "remmed" as not being in force.

Thanks for your reply.

This is just a reflection of how the actual entries are written into the registry by the original startup program installation.

I think you'll find the lines with the "" marks relate to entries with long file and directory names, e.g:-

C:\Program Files\Peak Systems\UI-View32\xxxx etc etc.

Entries without the "" are maybe truncated like this:-

C:\Progra~1\Peaksy~1\UI-Vie~1\xxxx

Hope that helps...

Sorry. That does not seem to be the case. I have two with embedded ~. No "". All the others are without ~ but some have quotes and others do not.

Have you examined your own to see what you find?

Thanks

Yes I did examine mine, and that's the conclusion I came to. In my MSCONFIG STARTUP every case where it fits the 8 x 3 format there were no quote marks.

Well, thanks for the feedback, Roger. whether this is yet another variation among the editions of XP that seem to be out there, I don't know. Guess I'll haveto look among MS FAQ's forthe answer.

Happy New Year.
