I have a Word document that that once contained a macro that has since been deleted. Looking under the 'Tools->Macro->Macros...' button shows that there are no macros, as does inspection of the VBA editor; Not a macro in sight! Yet still, when opening the document, the macros present warning pops up.

Anyone have any ideas?

This is probably because your security settings are set to High or Medium under Tools, Macro, Security. If you are confident of your virus scanning software you can reset this to Low and the message will not appear.

Thanks Moira, but the problem I'm having with the file is that our mail server filters out anything it considers to be a bit dodgy (or from the engineers point of view - Useful). Sadly documents with imbedded macros are blocked and not delivered. This makes the exchanging of this doc with other people in the world a bit irritating.

Problem solved!

The module for the macros, 'NewMacros', still existed even though all the macros within the document were removed. Removal of this empty module has stopped the macro warning at startup.

Thanks Bonifale, I just had exactly the same problem and your solution worked perfectly. Mutual help really works!
