MS Word problem - I change the style, reapply the numbering, and....

Here's the problem:

I change the style of the list numbers, which throws the numbering off. So I reapply the numbering, which reverts the style back to the previous, unwanted, old style. Cannot figure out a workaround. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Create a new style, based on the current numbering style. Then give it the other features you want.

Yes, Word numbering is a nightmare and very easy to break. Take a read of the article below for a full explanation and it will probably give you a resolution (and prevent you from falling into the pit again)!

The next version of Office wil probably have the number code completely rewritten frombottom up.

Madawc and tf1,

Thank you for the suggestion and the information. I tried Madawc's suggestion, blew away the style and recreated it, but it's still having numbering issues. I'm rereading the Words Numbering Explained document, trying to understand where I must be going wrong. Thanks for your help!

Deleting the style it a good step, but some of the numbering list styles are stored in the Registry and it may be these that have become corrupt.

As per a tip from the document Words Numbering Explained to strip the Normal style from all defined styles and to turn off all "automatically update styles" areas, the template numbering and numbering styles seem to be stable. Thank you so much for the help. Couldn't have done it without you.
