MS Word: Generating TOC and List of Tables and List of Figures faulty 1

When I generate the TOC and the List of Tables and the List of Figures, instead of listing the correct page numbers the lists generate to display all page 1s. So for example it looks like this:

Table 1........1
Table 2........1
Table 3........1
Table 4........1
Table 5........1

What is causing this to happen? What can I do to fix it? I'm at wits' end.
Thanks in advance for any advice,
-Shawn

1. Check for section breaks that set the page numbering back to 1.

2. You are unclear if ALL your generated references show as page 2. Yoy mention Table of Contents, Table of Figures, and List of Tables. However, you example is only the List of Tables. Please confirm that ALL generated tables shows as Page 2 - in particular the Table of Contents. If this is actually correct, then definitley check # 1.

Thanks for your reply fumei. All the pages themselves are behaving normally, to all outward appearance. You say I am unclear if all of my generated references show as page 2, but that is incorrect - they are all appearing as page 1. Including the TOC and both the List of Tables and the List of Figures. So here's another example:

TOC
Chapter 1............1
Heading 1............1
Heading 2............1
Chapter 2............1
Heading 1............1
Heading 2............1

You say to check #1 - can you give me some clarification as to what you mean by that? Thanks you so much!

Hi BlueHorizon,

Well I tried what you suggested and it changed all the page 1s to page 2s. I'm really worried about this, if you have any other suggestions I am very willing to try them, I need to have this template to my boss.

Thank you very much,
Shawn

I've used Table of Contents repeatedly and never had trouble. Except that it doesn't update automatically; right-click and Update Field is sometimes needed.

Failing that, try recreating the 'table of contents', and see if you have some odd option set, maybe a holdover from someone else's work.

A third possibility is that this is a feature of the template and would not apply to a document created from that template. Try it and see, if you haven't already.

It is also worth telling us which version of Word you have, and what version of Windows (or something else) it is running under.

I'm using Windows 2000 and Word 2000. I will try your suggestions, Madawc. Wish me luck! I need to get this to work!

I do have section breaks. Now what's happening is that the lists are generating correctly but when I close the document and reopen it the page numbers in the TOC and the Lists have all reverted back to 1s. This is extremely frustrating. I tried Madawc's suggestions and got no relief. I'm really worried about the ramifications if I can't get this fixed.

Does each section have its own page numbering?

No, each part doesn't have its own page numbering. The numbering is continual throughout the doc. Do you think this document is corrupted somehow? I don't want to give on it yet, because of all the work that's gone into it.

Sorry, I've said all I can think of. I did encounter cases where a document had got its paragraph numbering snarled and it was simplest to start again and copy selected portions.

Thanks Madawc. I really appreciate all the help.
Sincerely,
Shawn

You could also take a look at thread68-975525. I've not tried it myself.
