Hi,
using Windows XP sp3 always when I try to save a picture in Paint I get BMP file type by default. Is there any way I could just change file type to PNG and so when ever I save a file it would just be PNG as default.

It is annoying to have constantly change BMP to PNG file type.
Thanks

I don't think this is possible. I searched the registry sometime ago to try and get this issue fixed. There was nothing in the least bit obvious or otherwise that could alter the 'save file as' to PNG by default. I scoured the web too and a lot of people are out there asking the same question.

If your a dab hand with source code you might want to take a look at mspaint.exe using 'ResHack'...

This post I discovered seems to work by creating a blank template with the file type you wish, png, jpg, bmp etc.

He creates a shortcut to msPaint and points it to his existing blank template. Now whenever he opens msPaint it opens a blank pallet with the correct file type and he simply "save as" his new drawing and it takes the same file type.

Good Luck

OOPs I should have said, to save your new drawing make sure to change the name so you don't destroy your template.

And finally if you placed your template somewhere with long path names like:

C:\Documets and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\untitled.png

you need to change the target to shortened 8 character name:

C:\Docume~1\Admini~1\Desktop\untitled.png

or place your target somewhere with short named paths like: c:\untitled.png or c:\dell\untitled.png

well I think that's worth a star! [smile]

mscallisto,

That's pretty neat. I didn't even know you could use a template for MS Paint, though I suppose it makes since that you can. Great info!

grofaty,

Did that work for you?

Well, grofaty logged in at least on the 25th, but didn't stop by to let us know whether or not it helped..

grofaty,

IF you do read this, please post back as to whether or not mscallisto's response was helpful.

kjv1611, I have already found this work-around published by mscallisto before I have posted my first question in this thread. I don't like this idea, because a lot of time I just overwrite template and so get template corrupted.

I have searched the web in depth and it looks there is no settings to set ms-paint default PNG file type.

Is there any other ms-paint like tool on Windows? I am used to Ubuntu Linux where I use KolourPaint, which is very similar but much more powerful then ms-paint. But I also have to use Windows XP, so I need some kind of simple solution on Windows too.
Regards

If you're looking for an alternative, that's a different issue altogether. Take a look at the drawing programs at - you can click and select all of 'em if you want, and have it auto-download and install them for you. It's an awesome application in its own right, but the picture/drawing programs are great as well.

Also, I think that Paint in Windows 7, at least, uses PNG as the default format, or at least supports it.

Oh, and thanks for replying. We would never know whether you got the answer you needed unless you answer - help or no help, we need to know. [wink]
