Slashdot reports ( that Microsoft is ending extended support for windows 98. Does this mean windows updates won't supply updates if I need to re-install my copy of windows 98 on my machine? Should I download all the past updates and burn them to a CD? If so, does anyone know the fastest way to do this at the microsoft website?

I would, if I were you (actually, I already did...)
The way I did it was to go to the windows update site, and click on "Personalize Windows Update" on the left-hand side. Now, check the box that says "Display the link to the Windows Update Catalog under See Also."
Now, back on the left-hand side, you should see "Windows Update Catalog" under See Also.
After clicking on the new link, choose "Find updates for Microsoft Windows operating systems," pick the OS and load up your download basket. I burn to CD after pulling them down.

It doesn't hurt to make a CD if you have the time. However, I would be pretty confident that a lot of sites will continue to provide the updates for a long time after MS gets rid of them.
Also, the only support that's ended at this point is phone and tech support. The updates will continue until mid January of 2005.
