I just finished building an exchange 2000 member server.
I did this so that I could learn exchange. the server is in the domain,
I ran tests and managed to send & recieve internally(within my network).
I also sent externally to my hotmail account sucessfully.
afterwards I restarted the server, then realised that the MS exchange attendant service hadn't started. now I cant even configure a mail box anymore.
I tried restarting it together with the other services that are dependant on it like the MS exchange information store.
How can I get this running again, are there patches or fixes that I'm supposed to run?
I would greatly appreciate any idea's - thank you

Check the Event log for starters, it gives you the reason(s)

Hi Marc
this is what the eventvwr revealed

The system failed to register network adapter with settings:

Adapter Name : {6C2CFC22-DC4E-473E-AD6B-DB07E16FDFCC}
Host Name : myexchange server
Adapter-specific Domain Suffix : medomain.com
DNS server list :
192.168.0.1
Sent update to server : 8.4.112.75
IP Address(es) :
192.168.3.1

The reason it could not register was because the DNS server refused the dynamic update request. This could happen for the following reasons: (a) current DNS update policies do not allow this computer to update the DNS domain name configured for this adapter, or (b) the authoritative DNS server for this DNS domain name does not support the DNS dynamic update protocol.

To register a DNS host (A) resource record using the specific DNS domain name for this adapter, contact your DNS server or network systems administrator.

2)The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service depends on the Microsoft Exchange System Attendant service which failed to start because of the following error:
The operation completed successfully.

3)The Microsoft Exchange MTA Stacks service depends on the Microsoft Exchange System Attendant service which failed to start because of the following error:
The operation completed successfully.

4)The Microsoft Exchange POP3 service depends on the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service which failed to start because of the following error:
The dependency service or group failed to start.

I hope this wll give you the information trequired to troubleshoot.

What I was hoping for was an Event-ID and Source , that is more to the point.

Hi Marc

Thanks for your response here are the event id and sources I hope this is helpful. In the meantime I'll also do some research and on them to see what I get

Event ID Source
101 NNTPSVC
101 W3SVC

11153 DNSAPI
7001 Service control Manager
7022 Service Control Manager
54 w32time

And when I go into service all exchange services would have stopped. Now I cant even get into ESM. Im thinking of rebuilding the server and re-installing exchange.

Most of them are warnings, so less 'critical'
Surely there must be one in there with source :

Microsoft Exchange Information Store service and/or Microsoft Exchange System Attendant and/or Microsoft Exchange MTA Stacks service
