Hi again, I've seen several questions in this forum about modifying the MRU list in Office but in all the programs (word, excel, etc) of my office XP the "recently used file list" selection is greyed out. Completely unselectable!!! I would like to turn it on. Any suggestions on how??!!??
Thanks

Show or hide the list of recently used documents on the File menu
On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the General tab.
Select or clear the Recently used file list check box.
When the Recently used file list check box is selected, you can specify the number of recently used files that appear on the File menu. Is this what you meant?

coakerb, that's the problem!!! the recently used file list selection box is greyed out. I CAN'T select the check box. I need to know what's wrong so I can make it selectable.

OK try this...........open Word click on HELP on the TOOLBAR and click REPAIR,follow the prompts...you may need your OFFICE XP CD...keep us posted!

HI again, Thanks for info. Repairs completed but no change... Recently used file list selection is still greyed out and unselectable. will appreciate any other suggestions.

Running out of ideas here.another thought, have you TWEAK UI?and maybe done this?

Have allow recent documents on the start menu checked in TweakUI. This is under Explorere, not IE. There is a setting called "Maintain document history" under Explorer

I'm Back... That was it!!! Completely forgot I had TweakUI. Wouldn't have thought about that making a difference anyway, but now it's fixed. Much appreciate your time and assistance. Thanks, Coakerb.

As an additional bit of info for anyone viewing this thread. I was having the same problem using XP Home Edition. I did not have Tweak UI installed. So I downloaded Tweak UI and installed it (per the instructions in the link provided by coakerb). Once I checked the box in Tweak UI the recently used files option became available.
