I am having trouble with the Information Store and sync issues on the existing Exchange 5.5 server. I have therefore decided to completely rebuild the Exchange server on a new box, recreate the Mailboxes manually and probably push the existing mailboxes back in from users .pst files. That way I don't think I will be in danger of taking over any corruption from the existing store.

I am thinking along the correct lines here?

I am going to have the same site and server names as well - even though I know that I will have to take the existing server out of commission whilst I prepare the new server.

Any thoughts would be welcome

Thanks in advance

Hi!
Here is and example about moving an Exchange 5.5 to a new hardware:

PS:Did you try reapplying Service Pack 4 for Exchange 5.5? Very often it fixes such problems

You could be creating a lot more work for yourself than might be necessary here. What issues are you having with your IS? Exchange offers some powerful tools for repairing problematic stores and if you plan a re-build then surely it might be worth a little troubleshooting first.

If you do re-build, there are a couple of possibilities worth considering. You mention that you would create mailboxes and push back email from users pst's, this could be more time consuming than the exchange re-build itself. However, if you users have a pst as the default delivery location you may have to do it this way.
If, however, your users have exchange hosted mailboxes then you may well worth consider using exmerge to move the mailboxes - this way you will have something to fall back on if something goes wrong during the move. Exmerge can be run in one of two methods - one step (server to server via pst), or two step (server to pst ,{rebuild}, pst to server).

Either way, you can minimise the mailbox creation by using the directory import / export tool with exchange administrator.

We have 2 Exchange sites each with 1 server connected by a site connector. On one site with have an Internet Mail Connector which handles all internet bound mail, and all seems to be working great apart from a few users in the site were the is no IMC, they get the following error at random intervals, and the recipients are all in the GAL as Custom Recipients. Any help appreciated.
