I have an application that uses MSDE 2000. The user needs to be able to move the database to another computer to take home and work on it and then later put it back to the original computer.

Both computers have their own MSDE 2000 running. What are the steps to move/copy the database from one server to another.
Also is it possible to restore database from backup of another computer.

The user does not have Enterprise Manager running and thus everything needs to be done in transact-sql.

THANKS for your imput.

Are you talking about a prgrammer taking home a database to work on it or a a user taking a copy of the database out to a remote location and then wanting to synch up his chnages when he comes back into the office?

In the first case, yes indeed you can resotre the cbackup on his computer. You would not want to do this in the second case. In this case you would want to set up replication. Otherwise you will end up with data integrity problems.

No, It is the end-user taking home the database to work with.
At a given point-in time they will only be working on one server either home or office and then move the changes from one to another.

Can you restore the backup from one server to another?

Personally, I'd set up a VPN tunnel for this person and avoid the whole issue. But replication is a better choice than restoring the backup if the user is going to change data. What if someone else uses the same database and changes data as well? By restoring the backup from that person's laptop, you lose any changes made to the database while he or she was running in disconnected mode.

WHat you are talking about doing is a very unsafe way to operate concernign your data integrity.

This will not happen (and even if it happens they are willing to live with the data loss) I am talking a one man operation.

My other question was if it is possible to take back from one and restore into another server using transact-sql?

I answered that in the first response. Yes. you can do that. Look up the restore command in BOL. Backup without being able to restore on a differnt machine would be pretty useless.
