Short on HD space so I was thinking of just using the "move wizard" to transfer the mailboxes of a few users to keep Exchange 2003 going until new hardware arrives. The public folder database is on another drive from the private store database and has plenty of space. Is this a "kosher" thing to do, will it present any issues?

Thanks in advance for the help, googling hasn't shown me any answers yet and I may need to try this right after the holiday, Happy Turkey Day all......

You can't move mailboxes to a Public Folder database. If you're running Enterprise, you can create another Mailbox Storage Group, with a mailbox store on another drive.

Various things to check for getting space back if you only have XC Standard.

Check the event log for 1221 events to see how much white space you have. If you have a lot then the XC databases won't expand until that is filled, you'd just have to keep an eye on it.
NB There is no point running an off-line defrag in this instance even if you have tons of white space.

Are you running mailbox management to purge older mail, deleted items etc.?

Turn down the deleted items retention time and wait for the maintenance job to run to free up white space.

If you have any orphaned mailboxes taking up space then turn down the retain mailboxes option to remove them more quickly.

Lots of things you can do in other words.
