Hi
Could anybody give me some advice/tips on moving an NT over to 2K using a new server.

My plan is to set the new server up and promote it to a domain controller for the existing domain. I presume it will then happily work along side the old NT serverwhich I can then demote if I need to (how do I do this?) or simply remove (I hope!).

Is this the best way to do it. And what could possibly go wrong!?

Thanks in advance
Chris

Simple and clean way of doing this is:

1. backup your DC
2. upgrade it to W2K
3. Bring your new server online and dcpromo it to a DC
4. Move Control of the Domain over to the new server
5. Install all ther services you were running on the old DC on the new one.
6. Bring down the Old server and see how things go.

Note:

You can't demote NT4 DC's
You will have to Authorize the DHCP server in W2K.

tangostar's line up is good. there are some little things you will encounter along the way. read up on the FSMO roles and AD if this is all new to you. i like to grab an old pc and build it as an nt 4.0 box, bring it online as a BDC and get it synchronized.. then take it offline. (off the wire and turned off). this will be your fail safe server if the PDC has issues on the upgrade. read up on the topic. there is tons of info out there...
