I have been using XP on my laptop with a local account. I would like to use an account supplied by my Server. However once I create the new account and log in, the OS makes a new home folder with a fresh bunch of settings. I doesn't seem to matter how I try to rename the folders, I can't seem to associate the Domain user account with the old local home folder (if that makes any sense).
Does anyone know how the OS associates the user account with the home folder? I presume it's in the Registry somewhere.
Thanks
Chris

under the account properties, you have a tab called Profile, and you can point to the profile you wish.

There are a number of ways to approach this. Unless a roaming profile is defined on the server (Active directory, users, profile in 2k, or User Manager, profile in NT), the system will always create a new local profile the first time you log on to workstation with a domain user id (even if that user id is the same as one you have been using locally).

So, you could specify a roaming profile location, and then use the copyto feature (system properties, Advanced tab, user profiles button) to copy your old local profile to this location (on the server). You will then start with a copy of your local profile (but obviously its a new profile - the 2 will now be separate).

Or you could use the same copyto feature to copy the old local profile over the new domain profile (eg, assuming both same name, from local to local.domainname). This will have much the same effect as the roaming profile - but only on the one machine.

Thanks, guys. I will try this when I get back to work!
