I have a standalone NT 4.0 server with about 100 users on it. I need to move it to new hardware. Is there an easy way to do it? If I install NT 4 on the new box and restore from tape, it will overwrite all of the hardware specific stuff on the new box. Is there a better way? I need to be able to move users and keep permissions intact.

is the box the same model? or identical? if they are... just clone it so you could set the second box without killing the first box...

If the box was identical, it would be a piece of cake. They're never identical. I can't imagine a scenario in which I would be moving to new hardware that was the same as the old, except in the case of failure. Even then, depending on the age of the original, they probably wouldn't be the same.

Try the restore on the new box anyway. Unless you need a SCSI controller with which runs your boot/system partition, you should be alright to boot with the different hardware. Then it's just a matter of removing the old, and installing the new drivers. [auto] MCSE NT4/W2K
