Can you move exchange 200 from one machine to another simply by backing it up using the exchange back up and then restoring it to another location? Or is there a more "correct" way to go about these things, I've seen various bits and bobs floating about, none of which mention using a backup and restore which seems to me to be the obvious solution - any ideas??

Cheers

Yep you have to go through the proper channels if you want it to work correctly. Look up

XADM: How to Remove the First Exchange 2000 Server Computer from the Site

It doesn't mention one thing though so let me make a recommendation. I replicated everything that needed to be replicated, transferred the mailboxes through AD, then unreplicate everything from the old server. I just finished it up this evening. Gonna uninstall E2k from the server tommorow. Hope your move goes well.

Bang on!!

Thanks very much indeed - makes you wonder how good a restore from backup would be if you had a hardware failure though doesn't it!

Well as long as you had another server that you could actually RENAME you will be alright with your backup. This way your email server changes names. And as an added bonus, as long as you keep your old server on long enough Outlook clients will automagically change to point to the new server!
